01 · The challenge

Selling cosmetics on Snapchat in a saturated Saudi market

The brand sold cosmetics and beauty products online in Saudi Arabia, a market already full of established local and international names. It wanted Snapchat to do two jobs at once: drive direct purchases and build brand awareness. And it needed a return that could support years of scaling, not one good month.

Market competition

Penetrating a saturated beauty market where local and international brands were already well known.

Platform strategy

Using Snapchat’s young, youth-oriented audience for direct-response, sales-driven campaigns, not only awareness.

Cultural nuance

Building campaigns around Saudi buying behaviour, including a significant gifting culture.

Underneath all three sat the performance question: could the account hold a sustainable ROAS in a competitive ad auction, long enough to keep investing month after month?

02 · The strategy

Audience, creative and scaling, built for Saudi Snapchat

ObjectiveDrive direct purchase revenue and build brand awareness within the Saudi market, at a ROAS that supports continuous scaling.

Pillar 1

Audience-centric architecture

Campaigns segmented by purchase intent and demographic signals, with a deliberate focus on the male gift buyers that the data surfaced.

Pillar 2

Creative for Saudi Snapchat users

High-volume video for sound-on viewing: product benefits, giftability and trending looks, in Commercials and Collection Ads.

Pillar 3

Performance-driven scaling

A rigorous testing framework for audiences, creatives and offers. Budget moved to ad sets with an efficient eCPC and a positive ROAS.

The biggest decision came from the data, not the brief. A cosmetics brand would normally aim its media at women buying for themselves. In this account, between 51% and 78% of the top buyers were men, and much of what they bought was a gift. So the creative had to work for two buyers at once: the woman choosing a look for herself, and the man choosing a present for someone else. Giftability became a creative theme of its own, next to product benefits and trending looks.

The second decision was about devices. Between 85% and 89% of the high-value audience used iOS. Instead of spreading budget evenly, the majority of it went to iOS users, where the buyers actually were.

Everything else was discipline. Every audience, creative and offer went through the same testing framework, and only ad sets that kept the effective cost per click low and the ROAS positive earned more budget. That is what let the account scale for four years without the return collapsing.

Nov 2021 · Starting point

A crowded Saudi beauty market

The brand sold cosmetics online in Saudi Arabia, against established local and international names. The goal was direct purchase revenue on Snapchat, at a return high enough to keep scaling.

  • Saturated beauty market with strong incumbents
  • Snapchat chosen for its young, highly engaged Saudi audience
  • Target: a sustainable ROAS that funds continuous scaling
The commitment

4 years

of long-term scaling, November 2021 to October 2025

Step 1 · Audience

The top buyers were men buying gifts

We segmented campaigns by purchase intent and demographic signals. The data showed something most beauty brands would not plan for: men made up most of the top buyers, buying cosmetics as gifts.

  • Campaigns segmented by purchase intent and demographics
  • Dedicated angles for gifting occasions
  • Messaging for self-purchasers and gift buyers side by side

Step 2 · Device

Budget follows the iPhone

The high-value Saudi audience was overwhelmingly on iOS, so we put the majority of the budget behind iOS users instead of splitting it evenly across devices.

  • Device split reviewed against purchase value
  • Majority of the budget allocated to iOS users
What it served

Step 3 · Creative

Video built for sound-on Snapchat

Snapchat users watch with sound on and decide fast. We produced a high volume of short video around product benefits, giftability and trending looks, in Commercials and Collection Ads, all within local cultural norms.

  • High-volume video optimised for sound-on viewing
  • Commercials and Collection Ads to show products and drive action
  • Copy and visuals checked against Saudi cultural norms

Step 4 · Scale

Test everything, scale the winners

A standing testing framework ran across audiences, creatives and offers. Ad sets that delivered an efficient cost per click and a positive ROAS got more budget; the rest were cut.

  • Rolling tests on audiences, creatives and offers
  • Winning ad sets scaled aggressively
  • eCPC and ROAS used as the scaling gates

05 · What we learned

Three lessons for beauty brands on Snapchat in KSA

Your buyer may not be your user

51–78% of the top buyers were men. Planning only for women buying for themselves would have missed most of the revenue.

Follow the device

With 85–89% of high-value buyers on iOS, concentrating budget there was a simple, high-impact decision.

Scale on rules, not hunches

An efficient eCPC and a positive ROAS were the gates for more budget. That discipline carried the account for four years.

FAQ

Questions about this case

How much revenue did the Snapchat campaign generate?

$1,017,468.82 in revenue between November 2021 and October 2025, from $524,902.38 in ad spend. That is a purchase ROAS of 1.94.

Why target men for a cosmetics brand?

Because the data said so. Between 51% and 78% of the top buyers were men, largely buying cosmetics as gifts. Gifting is a strong buying habit in Saudi Arabia, so we built campaigns and creative for gift buyers next to self-purchasers.

Why was most of the budget spent on iOS?

85–89% of the brand's high-value Saudi audience used iOS, so the majority of the budget was allocated to iOS users rather than split evenly across devices.

Which Snapchat ad formats did you use?

Mainly Commercials and Collection Ads, with short video built for sound-on viewing. The account produced 20,131,080 two-second video views at an effective cost per click of $0.48.

Is a 1.94 ROAS good for a cosmetics brand?

This case does not compare it with an industry benchmark. What it shows is that a 1.94 purchase ROAS was positive and stable enough to keep scaling the account for four years and cross $1M in revenue.

Do you run Snapchat Ads in Saudi Arabia from Amman?

Yes. Our Snapchat Ads team is based in Amman and runs accounts for brands selling in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the Gulf.
