Quick answer

Shopify suits most product brands selling across Jordan, the Gulf and internationally; Salla is strongest for brands focused on Saudi Arabia and the GCC, with mada, STC Pay, Apple Pay, Tabby and Tamara built in; WooCommerce suits content-led businesses that want full control and are ready to manage hosting. AlGurus builds on all three: see Shopify, Salla and WordPress/WooCommerce development.

Key takeaways
  • Shopify: hosted, multi-country selling, strong ad integrations; watch apps and third-party transaction fees.
  • Salla: Arabic-first with Saudi payments built in; best when Saudi Arabia is your main market.
  • WooCommerce: free plugin with full control and no sales fee; you own hosting, speed and security.
  • Decide on customers’ location, payment methods, who runs the tech, content and growth plan, and cost the full year.

Shopify, WooCommerce and Salla can all run a profitable store in Jordan or Saudi Arabia. They are built on different models, though, and the right choice depends on where your customers are, how you take payment, and how much of the technical work you want to own. In short: Shopify suits most product brands selling across Jordan, the Gulf and beyond; Salla is strongest for brands focused on Saudi Arabia and the GCC; WooCommerce suits businesses that want full control or a store inside a content-led WordPress site.

We build on all three. AlGurus is a Shopify Partner and a Salla Partner, and our team develops WordPress and WooCommerce sites, so this comparison is not written to sell one platform. It is the same checklist we walk through with clients before recommending one.

How do Shopify, WooCommerce and Salla compare?

The table below compares the three platforms on the points that matter most for a store in Jordan or Saudi Arabia. Details change as platforms update, so confirm the current terms on each platform’s site before you commit.

When is Shopify the right choice?

Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform: you pay a monthly plan, and Shopify takes care of servers, security, uptime and the checkout. On 14 October 2026 its plans were $39, $105 and $399 a month billed monthly (Basic, Grow, Advanced), with lower prices billed yearly, and Plus from $2,300 a month.

Shopify fits best when:

  • You sell products to more than one country. Shopify Markets manages currencies, prices and domains per market, which suits a Jordanian brand selling to the Gulf or beyond.
  • You plan to grow with paid ads. Shopify’s native integrations with Meta, Google and other ad platforms make tracking and product catalogues easier to set up.
  • You do not want to manage hosting. Updates, security and checkout are Shopify’s job.

The trade-offs are real. If your business country is not covered by Shopify Payments, you connect a third-party gateway and pay Shopify’s fee per sale on top of the gateway’s rates. Apps add monthly costs. And Arabic quality depends on choosing and testing a theme that handles RTL properly. Our guide to what a Shopify store costs in Jordan breaks these lines down.

When is WooCommerce the right choice?

WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store. The software costs nothing; you pay for hosting, a theme, any premium extensions, and the time to keep WordPress, WooCommerce and plugins updated and secure.

WooCommerce fits best when:

  • Content drives your sales. If articles, guides and landing pages bring your customers, WordPress is a strong content platform with the store built in.
  • You need full control. You own the code and database and can customize almost anything, including unusual product logic.
  • You want to avoid platform fees on sales. WooCommerce takes no cut; you pay only your gateway’s rates.

The trade-off is responsibility. Speed and security depend on your hosting and on how carefully plugins are chosen and maintained. A WooCommerce store with cheap hosting and thirty plugins can be slow and fragile. With a good developer and good hosting, it can be excellent. Our WordPress development team builds WooCommerce stores with that maintenance planned in from day one.

When is Salla the right choice?

Salla is a hosted ecommerce platform from Saudi Arabia, built Arabic-first. Its official information page reports 68K+ active merchants (2025) and coverage that is strongest in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the GCC. Built-in payments cover mada, STC Pay, Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard and buy-now-pay-later services such as Tabby and Tamara, which are exactly the methods Saudi shoppers expect.

Salla fits best when:

  • Saudi Arabia is your main market. Local payments, local shipping integrations and an Arabic-first experience come ready.
  • Your team prefers to work in Arabic. The admin runs in Arabic and English with an RTL design.
  • You want a hosted platform with Saudi payment habits built in. Less setup is needed to accept mada and BNPL payments.

The trade-off is reach. Salla is built around Saudi Arabia and the GCC, so a brand registered in Jordan, or one selling mainly to Jordan or outside the region, should confirm eligibility and payment activation for its country first. As a Salla Partner, our Salla development team can check this for you. Salla also works well with paid social: one honey brand in Saudi Arabia we run Instagram Ads for on Salla reached a 3.95× ROAS, 640 orders and 76.6K SAR in revenue on the same 19K SAR monthly budget.

How do you decide between them?

Most platform decisions come down to five questions. Answer them honestly and the choice is usually clear.

Fig. 2Five questions that pick your platform A decision aid, not a scoring formula. When two platforms tie, choose the one your team can run day to day.
  1. Where are your customers?Mostly Saudi Arabia: Salla leads. Jordan, several Gulf countries or international: Shopify leads.
  2. How will customers pay?List the methods you must offer (cards, cash on delivery, mada, Apple Pay, Tabby, Tamara) and check each platform and gateway for your country.
  3. Who runs the technical side?No in-house developer: a hosted platform (Shopify or Salla). A developer or agency on retainer: WooCommerce is an option.
  4. How important is content? If content and SEO drive most sales, WordPress with WooCommerce deserves a serious look.
  5. How will you grow?Paid ads across several countries favour Shopify; Saudi-focused social selling fits Salla well.

Two practical tips. First, cost the full year, not the first month: plan, apps or plugins, hosting, payment fees and maintenance together. Second, think about where you will be in three years. Moving platforms later is possible, but it means migrating products, customers and URLs, so it is worth choosing with growth in mind.

Is the answer different for Jordan and Saudi Arabia?

Often, yes. For a business based in Jordan, payment setup is the first filter: you need a gateway that works for a Jordanian business and supports cash on delivery, which remains common. Shopify and WooCommerce both connect to regional gateways, so they are the usual shortlist. For a business based in Saudi Arabia, Salla’s built-in local payments and Arabic-first admin make it a strong default, while Shopify is the better fit if you also sell heavily to other countries.

Many of our clients sell in both markets. In those cases we look at where most revenue comes from today and where it will come from in two years, then choose one main platform rather than running two stores without a clear reason.

How does AlGurus help you choose and build?

We have built 75+ Shopify stores and work on Salla and WooCommerce as well, so we recommend based on your market and operations, not on a single platform we happen to sell. A typical process is a short consultation to map markets, payments and growth plans; a recommendation with the full-year cost of each realistic option; and then the build on the chosen platform through our ecommerce development team.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for a store in Jordan: Shopify, WooCommerce or Salla?

For most product brands based in Jordan, Shopify or WooCommerce, because both connect to regional payment gateways and support cash on delivery. Salla is built around Saudi Arabia and the GCC, so a Jordan-registered business should confirm eligibility and payment activation first.

Which platform is best for selling in Saudi Arabia?

Salla is a strong default when Saudi Arabia is the main market: it is Arabic-first and its built-in payments cover mada, STC Pay, Apple Pay, cards, Tabby and Tamara. Shopify fits better when you also sell heavily to other countries.

Is WooCommerce really free?

The plugin is free and open source, and it takes no cut of your sales. You still pay for hosting, a theme, premium extensions and the time to keep WordPress and plugins updated and secure.

Does Shopify charge a fee on every sale?

Only when you do not use Shopify Payments. With a third-party gateway, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus (shopify.com, Oct 2026), on top of the gateway’s own rates.

Which platform handles Arabic best?

Salla is Arabic-first. WordPress supports Arabic and RTL natively, and Shopify supports Arabic storefronts; on both, RTL quality depends on the theme, so test menus, galleries and the cart in Arabic before you choose.

Can AlGurus build on all three platforms?

Yes. AlGurus is a Shopify Partner and Salla Partner and also builds WordPress and WooCommerce stores. We have built 75+ Shopify stores and recommend a platform from your markets, payments and growth plan. See ecommerce development.
