10signs your store has outgrown its design

Quick answer

Your Shopify store needs a redesign when good traffic stops turning into orders because of the store itself: slow mobile pages, a dated design, weak product pages, app bloat, no working Arabic, broken tracking or a falling conversion rate. One sign is usually a fix; three or more usually call for a Shopify store redesign that keeps your URLs, SEO and products intact.

Key takeaways
  • Watch for slow mobile pages, weak product pages, app bloat, missing Arabic and broken tracking.
  • A reskin fixes how a store looks; a rebuild fixes how it works.
  • Products, customers and orders live in Shopify, so a redesign can keep them, and keep URLs with 301 redirects where needed.
  • Fix tracking, relaunch, then scale ads: a store that converts better makes every ad dinar work harder.

Most Shopify stores do not break overnight. They age quietly: a few apps added for a campaign, a theme that has not been updated in years, product pages written for a smaller catalogue, tracking that stopped working after a change nobody remembers. The clearest sign a store needs a redesign is that it no longer turns good traffic into orders as well as it should, and the causes are in the store rather than in the ads.

This guide lists ten signs we look for when merchants in Jordan and the Gulf ask whether their store needs a Shopify store redesign. It then explains the difference between a reskin and a rebuild, how a redesign keeps your URLs, SEO and products safe, and why a redesign and paid ads work best together. It draws on our work building and improving 75+ Shopify stores.

What are the signs your Shopify store needs a redesign?

Check your store against each sign below. One sign on its own is usually a fix; three or more together usually point to a redesign.

  1. The store is slow, especially on phones

Most shoppers in Jordan and the Gulf browse on their phones. If product and collection pages take several seconds to load on mobile data, shoppers leave before they see the product. Run your key pages through Google’s PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile results and Core Web Vitals, not only the desktop score.

  2. The design looks dated next to your competitors

Shoppers judge trust in seconds. Old banner sliders, crowded headers, inconsistent fonts and low-quality images make a brand look smaller than it is, especially in premium categories such as watches, jewellery and perfume.

  3. The mobile experience feels like a shrunken desktop site

Tiny buttons, menus that are hard to open, filters that cover the screen and an add-to-cart button that scrolls out of view all cost orders. A mobile-first design puts the price, variants, delivery information and the buy button where a thumb can reach them.

  4. Product pages do not answer buying questions

The product page (PDP) is where the sale is won. If it lacks clear images, size or spec details, delivery times and costs, return terms, payment options such as cash on delivery, and reviews, shoppers either leave or send the same questions on WhatsApp again and again.

  5. App bloat: too many apps, too many scripts

Every app that adds code to the storefront can slow pages and conflict with other apps. Stores that have grown for a few years often carry apps that are no longer used, or several apps doing the same job, each billed every month. A redesign is the right moment to remove them and build the essentials into the theme.

  6. No Arabic version, or an Arabic version that breaks

In Jordan and the Gulf, many shoppers prefer to buy in Arabic. A store with no Arabic, or one where the right-to-left layout breaks menus, galleries and the cart, loses those customers. Arabic needs to be designed in, not bolted on.

  7. Tracking is broken, so ads cannot learn

Meta, Google, Snapchat and TikTok optimize toward the purchases they can see. If GA4, the pixels or server-side events (such as Meta’s Conversions API) are missing, duplicated or firing on the wrong step, the ad platforms learn from bad data, and your cost per order rises. Compare orders in Shopify with purchases reported in your ad accounts; a large gap is a warning sign.

  8. Conversion rate is falling while traffic holds

If sessions are stable or growing but orders are not, the problem is usually in the store: speed, trust, product pages or checkout. Look at your Shopify analytics over the last six to twelve months and check where shoppers drop off between product view, add to cart, checkout and purchase.

  9. Your team fights the theme to launch anything

If every campaign landing page, new collection or seasonal banner needs a developer, the theme is slowing your marketing down. Modern Shopify themes use flexible sections that your team can rearrange without code.

  10. The store no longer matches the brand or the catalogue

Brands evolve. A store designed for twenty products and one market rarely fits three hundred products sold in several countries. Navigation, filters and collections should reflect how customers shop your catalogue today.

One sign is usually a fix. Three or more together usually point to a redesign.

Reskin or rebuild: which does your store need?

A redesign is not always a rebuild. The right scope depends on what is actually wrong.

Reskin vs rebuild for a Shopify store
ReskinRebuild
What changesVisual design, layout of key pages, brand stylingTheme, page templates, navigation, apps, tracking and often content
What staysCurrent theme, most apps and setupProducts, customers, orders, URLs and SEO value (migrated with care)
Fits whenThe store works well but looks datedSpeed, mobile, app bloat, Arabic or tracking problems run deep
Timeline and costShorter and lowerLonger and higher, with a bigger long-term payoff

As a rule of thumb, a reskin fixes how a store looks; a rebuild fixes how it works. If signs 1, 3, 5, 6 or 7 apply, a reskin will usually not be enough, because those problems live in the theme, the apps and the setup, not in the colours.

How does a redesign keep your URLs, SEO and products safe?

Merchants worry, with good reason, that a redesign will cost them their Google rankings. On Shopify, the risk is lower than on many platforms, because products, collections, customers and orders live in Shopify itself rather than in the theme. A new theme can be built and previewed in the background and published only when it is ready. The real risks are changed URLs, lost content and broken tracking, and each one can be managed.

Fig. 1What a safe Shopify redesign keeps intact The checklist we work through before a redesigned store goes live.
  1. URLsProduct, collection and page URLs stay the same; any URL that must change gets a 301 redirect.
  2. SEO contentTitles, meta descriptions, collection text and structured data are carried over or improved, never dropped.
  3. Products and dataProducts, variants, images, customers, orders and reviews stay in Shopify untouched.
  4. TrackingGA4, pixels and Conversions API are rebuilt, tested and compared with Shopify orders before launch.
  5. Preview firstThe new theme is built unpublished, tested on real phones in Arabic and English, then launched at a quiet hour.
  6. After launchSearch Console, 404s, page speed and conversion rate are watched for the weeks that follow.

If you are also moving to Shopify from another platform, URL mapping and redirects become even more important. Our guide to Shopify SEO and marketing in Jordan covers the SEO side in more depth, and our ecommerce SEO team can audit the plan before launch.

How does a redesign work with paid ads?

A redesign and paid ads solve two halves of the same problem. Ads bring visitors; the store decides whether they buy. When the store converts poorly, every ad dinar works harder than it should, and raising the budget only buys more visitors who leave.

  • Better conversion lowers cost per order. With the same budget and the same click prices, a store that converts more visitors produces more orders.
  • Clean tracking lets ad algorithms learn. When purchases are reported accurately, Meta and Google can find more buyers like the ones you already have.
  • Faster pages waste fewer clicks. Paid clicks that bounce before the page loads are paid for all the same.
  • Campaign pages launch faster. Flexible sections let your team build a landing page for each offer without waiting on a developer.

The two also work best in sequence. We usually fix tracking first, then relaunch the store, then scale ecommerce ads once the new store has proven it converts. Improvement does not stop at launch either: one hardware store we have supported on Shopify for five years reached a 0.38% conversion rate (the hardware average is 0.22%) and a 76 JOD average order (the average is 55 JOD), with a 13.65% returning customer rate, through steady work on the store and its marketing.

Where should you start?

Start with evidence, not taste. Pull your mobile speed results, your conversion rate over the last year, the list of installed apps with their monthly fees, and the gap between Shopify orders and ad-reported purchases. If those numbers confirm three or more of the signs above, a redesign is likely worth it; if only one or two apply, targeted fixes may be enough.

Our Shopify store redesign service starts with exactly that review and recommends a reskin or a rebuild based on what we find. Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Shopify store needs a redesign?

Check for slow mobile pages, a dated design, a weak mobile experience, product pages that do not answer buying questions, app bloat, missing or broken Arabic, broken tracking, a falling conversion rate, a theme your team cannot edit, and a store that no longer fits your catalogue. Three or more usually point to a redesign.

Will a Shopify redesign hurt my SEO?

Not if it is planned. Products and collections live in Shopify, so URLs can stay the same; any URL that changes gets a 301 redirect, and titles, descriptions and structured data are carried over. Search Console and 404s are then monitored after launch.

Do I lose my products, customers or orders in a redesign?

No. Products, variants, customers, orders and most reviews are stored in Shopify, not in the theme. The new theme is built unpublished and switched on when it is ready.

What is the difference between a reskin and a rebuild?

A reskin updates the visual design on the existing setup and suits a store that works but looks dated. A rebuild replaces the theme, templates, apps and tracking and suits stores with speed, mobile, Arabic or tracking problems.

Should I redesign my store before running more ads?

If tracking is broken or the store converts poorly, yes: fix tracking first, relaunch the store, then scale ecommerce ads. More budget on a weak store mainly buys visitors who leave.

Can AlGurus redesign a Shopify store built by another agency?

Yes. As a Shopify Partner with 75+ Shopify stores built, we start with a review of speed, conversion, apps and tracking, then recommend a reskin or a rebuild. See Shopify store redesign.
